Today I had an interesting conversation with a good friend of mine. We were discussing on Psalms 46:10 "Be Still and know that I am God". Many times in our Christian walk, we associate this verse with topics like prayer or meditation. But as we begin to study the word of God in depth, we realize that the entire chapter is talking about something else rather than what we perceived before.
One important aspect of reading and interpreting the Bible is to look at the whole passage and see the context of the statement. The Bible originally was not written in chapters and verses. It was added centuries later.
The New American Standard bible says "Cease striving and know that I am God". The 1599 Geneva Study Bible give a good comment on verse 10. It says, that God is warning those who persecute the church to cease their cruelty for also they will feel that God is too strong for them against whom they fight. The basis for this statement is due to the preceding two verses - verse 8 and 9 that says "Come, behold the works of the LORD, how He has brought desolations on the earth; He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots with fire".
This verses shows the power and might of our Almighty God against those who disregard Him and His people. One of the greatest preacher who is also known as "Prince of Preachers", Charles H Spurgeon in his commentary of verse 10 says "Hold of your hands, ye enemies! Sit down and wait in patience, ye believers! Acknowledge that Jehovah is God, ye who feel the terrors of his wrath! Adore him and him only, ye who partake in the protection of his grace".
I hope today's write up will give you a brand new perspective of Psalms 46:10. It is not talking about meditation. Rather it talks about a warning to those "striving" against God and His people. They are to stop striving and realize Jehovah God is mighty and that their effort against Him is futile.
Aren't you glad that we serve a God who will stand for us and defend us when the enemy comes after our soul? He will indeed says to our enemy "Cease striving and know that I am God".
Be Blessed and have a great weekend.
